Civil War

Bob Dylan spoke
For an entire generation
Or so I've been told
I wish I could do the same
But how can I speak
For an entire generation
When there are so many of us
So many groups, clicks, and types
All with their own view
Of what's important
And most thinking
All the rest
Are fools
“Sports are stupid
And so are the jocks that play them”
“At least I don't sit inside all day
Playing video games”
“You're both stupid
There's no point to any of it”
“What do you know Goth
Go light some candles and hold a séance”
“Shut up stoner, you're worse than them
You don't do anything”
“At least they don't spend all of their time
Listening to old bands that sucked”
“Nothing's worse than you kids
That watch movies no one gets
And then spend an hour telling us
We're stupid for not getting it”
“They're still better than those emo kids
Who just sit around reading bad poetry”

The only thing that I know
About my generation
Is that we seem to hate each other
This isn't something new
But there are more players
In the game now
More types of players
With more feigned alliances
The weapons
Are much more dangerous now
We've mastered the use
Of guns, knives, and explosives
But more frighteningly
We have become masters
Of psychological warfare
And even if we've seen the effects
We still don't understand
The impact we have on each other
On those we love
And those we hate

Bob Dylan spoke
For a generation united
At least from what I've heard
But how can anyone speak
For a generation
That seems broken
In endless Civil war
